Description
8 inch cloth edge paper cone is flexible, so the only part that exactly follows the motion of the coil is the part immediately surrounding it. Beyond this small area, the folding of the 8 inch cloth edge paper cone absorbs more and more vibration, until most of the original vibratory motion disappears at the edges. Because of the lack of control over the entire cone surface, large areas of the cone generate spurious vibrations alone at certain frequencies.
Paper cones, while sounding brighter and more "alive," are more expensive for manufacturers. While their sound quality is usually ideal, the paper material itself readily absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and changes its composition over time, thus altering the sound characteristics of the paper cone. There are also numerous variables in the sound of paper - some manufacturers process the paper to make the sound more rounded. Other manufacturers use untreated paper, which produces a brighter, broader sound.
